Thread Seal Tape, Skived Film, and Pipe Wrap
PTFE Tape and Skived Sheet
PTFE tape and skived sheet are thin-gauge fluoropolymer products used for thread sealing, electrical insulation, and non-stick surface wrapping. We stock plumber's thread seal tape, industrial-grade skived PTFE film, and wider pipe wrap tape for applications where the chemical inertness and low friction of PTFE are needed in thin, flexible form.

Physical Characteristics
Density
2.1–2.2 g/cm³ (skived sheet)
Tensile Strength
15–35 MPa (ASTM D4894; skive-direction dependent)
Dielectric Strength
18–25 kV/mm at 1.5 mm sheet (ASTM D149); up to 80 kV/mm on thin (<0.1 mm) skived film
Chemical Resistance
Resistant To
- Near-universal resistance to acids, alkalis, and solvents (exceptions: molten alkali metals, elemental fluorine, interhalogen fluorinators)
- Petroleum fuels and hydrocarbon oils
- Steam and hot water (to 260 °C)
- Chlorine and bromine (gaseous, at moderate pressure)
- Hydrogen peroxide up to 30% at ambient temperature
- Food contact media (FDA 21 CFR 177.1550 compliant)
Limited Resistance
- Molten or dissolved alkali metals at high temperature (sodium, potassium)
- Concentrated hydrogen peroxide above 30% — verify case-by-case
- Hot concentrated nitric acid above ~70% — limit exposure
Not Recommended
- Elemental fluorine gas at elevated temperature and pressure
- Interhalogen fluorinators (ClF₃, BrF₃, OF₂) at any concentration — violent reaction risk
- Molten alkali metals (sodium, potassium), which decompose the fluorocarbon chain
- High-pressure structural sealing. PTFE tape and film are too thin for bolt-loaded flange gaskets, so use expanded PTFE or filled PTFE sheet.
Environmental Ratings
Flame Rating
Non-combustible (LOI > 95%); will not ignite or sustain flame in air
Standards & Certifications
Standards Compliance
Common Applications
- Plumbing thread sealing (BSP and NPT fittings)
- Gas installation thread sealing (yellow tape, AS 4623)
- Electrical insulation wrapping (high-voltage and RF applications)
- Non-stick surface wrapping (heat sealer bars, packaging machinery)
- Chemical piping thread sealing (all media)
- Laboratory equipment joints and fittings
- Bearing and slide surface facing (low friction)
- Food processing equipment thread sealing
Not Recommended For
- Thread seal tape is not a gasket — it seals tapered pipe threads (BSP/NPT) only, not flat flanges
- Thin PTFE film has very low bolt-load resistance. For flange gaskets, use expanded PTFE or filled PTFE sheet
- PTFE cold-flows under sustained load, so tape seals on pipe threads may loosen over years if the joint is not mechanically tight
- Skived film has directional strength: tensile properties vary with skive direction, and orientation should be specified for critical applications
- Standard white tape is not gas-rated; use yellow tape (AS 4623) for gas installations
Available Grades
Thread Seal Tape — Standard (White)
General-purpose PTFE thread seal tape for water, compressed air, and general plumbing. 12 mm × 12 m and 19 mm × 12 m spools. Not gas-rated.
Thread Seal Tape: Gas (Yellow)
Thicker, denser PTFE tape rated for natural gas, LPG, and fuel gas installations per AS 4623. Yellow colour for easy identification on gas lines.
Thread Seal Tape, Heavy Duty (Pink)
High-density industrial-grade PTFE tape for larger-diameter pipe threads, hydraulic fittings, and aggressive chemical service. Thicker and wider than standard tape.
Skived PTFE Film
Continuous PTFE sheet cut from a billet on a lathe. Available in 0.05–3 mm thickness for electrical insulation, non-stick wrapping, and thin-gauge gasket fabrication.
