Poron Microcellular Urethane

Poron is a microcellular urethane foam manufactured by Rogers Corporation that outperforms standard polyurethane foam in one critical area: compression set. Where conventional PU foam loses sealing force within months, Poron maintains consistent gasket pressure over the full equipment lifetime, typically less than 10% compression set in the standard ASTM D3574 test (1 000 hours at 70 °C, 50% deflection). Continuous service ranges to +90 °C. We stock Poron sheet in standard and extra-soft densities, with adhesive-backed options for peel-and-stick assembly.

Chemical Resistance

Resistant To

  • Water and aqueous cleaning solutions
  • Isopropyl alcohol (IPA) for brief wipe contact
  • Mild detergents
  • Most common household chemicals

Limited Resistance

  • Mineral oils (light splash only, not prolonged immersion)
  • Ethanol and methanol (brief contact acceptable)

Not Recommended

  • Petroleum solvents (petrol, toluene, xylene)
  • Ketones (acetone, MEK)
  • Strong acids and alkalis
  • Chlorinated solvents
  • Continuous hot water immersion above 50 °C

Standards & Certifications

Standards Compliance

UL 94 HBF / HF-1 (flammability, grade dependent)ASTM D3574 (flexible cellular materials — slab, bonded, and moulded foams: tensile, tear, density, compression set)ASTM D2240 (Shore O hardness)ASTM D149 (dielectric strength)AMS 3568 (PORON 4701-50 aerospace specification — select grade)RoHS compliantREACH compliant (no SVHC substances)IP rating contribution: typically enables IP54–IP67 (system dependent)

Common Applications

  • Electronics enclosure gaskets (IP54–IP67 sealing)
  • Mobile phone and tablet speaker seals
  • Display bezel and lens gaskets
  • LED luminaire sealing
  • Medical device cushioning and sealing
  • Automotive sensor and ECU enclosure gaskets
  • Telecommunications cabinet seals
  • Hard disk drive vibration dampening
  • Battery pack sealing and cushioning
  • HVAC controller and thermostat gaskets

Not Recommended For

  • Continuous service is limited to 90 °C (intermittent +121 °C). Not suited to high-temperature enclosure sealing above this range — specify silicone foam for sustained higher-temperature service
  • More expensive than standard PU sponge or neoprene foam; cost is justified only when long-term sealing consistency matters
  • Limited chemical resistance to solvents and hydrocarbons (not a chemical seal)
  • Relatively low tensile and tear strength compared to solid rubber; handles compression, not tension
  • Adhesive-backed variants require clean, dry bonding surfaces for reliable peel strength
  • Branded product from Rogers Corporation. Lead times may apply for non-standard thicknesses and densities

Available Grades

Brands we stock: Rogers Corporation (Poron)

Poron 4701-xx Standard Density

The workhorse Poron grade for environmental sealing and cushioning in electronics and industrial enclosures. Available in multiple thicknesses and firmness levels. Very low compression set maintains sealing force over the full product lifetime.

Poron 4790-92 Extra Soft

Ultra-low-density microcellular urethane for applications requiring minimal closure force: thin bezels, lightweight enclosures, and medical devices where low clamping pressure is available. Maintains the same low compression set as standard Poron grades.

Poron, Adhesive-Backed

Standard or extra-soft Poron supplied with pressure-sensitive acrylic adhesive on one side for peel-and-stick gasket assembly. Adhesive is pre-applied and protected by a release liner. Reduces assembly time and eliminates the need for liquid adhesives or mechanical retention.
